A male-sterile mutation in soybean (Glycine max) affecting chromosome arrangement in metaphase plate and cytokinesis Biocell
Pires Bione,Nilton Cesar; Suely Pagliarini,Maria; Alves de Almeida,Leones.
A spontaneous male-sterile, female-fertile mutation affecting bivalent arrangement at the metaphase plate and cytokinesis was detected in line BR98-197 of the soybean breeding program developed by Embrapa - National Soybean Research Centre. Untill diakinesis, meiosis was normal with chromosome pairing as bivalents. From this phase, in several meiocytes, bivalents were not able to organize a single metaphase plate and remained scattered in the cytoplasm in a few or several groups. In these meiocytes, chromosomes segregated in both divisions giving rise to several micronuclei. However, the main cause of male sterility was the absence of cytokinesis after telophase II. Instead of the typical tetrads of microspores, four nucleate coenocytic microspores were...

Phenotypic, cytogenetic and spike fertility characterization of a population of male-sterile triticale Scientia Agricola
Guerra,Divanilde; Pacheco,Marcelo Teixeira; Federizzi,Luiz Carlos.
Triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) is a good cereal for production of flour and feed. A segregating population of triticale was developed from a male-sterile (MS) plant. To determine whether this new source of male sterility in triticale is appropriate for use in breeding programs the expression of the male sterility phenotype was characterized through spike fertility, meiotic behavior, and pollen. Controlled crosses between male-sterile plants and control varieties male-fertile (MF) of triticale were also conducted, and cytological analyses were performed in the F2 and backcross plants. Plants with male-sterile phenotypes displayed reduced spike fertility when compared to plants with male-fertile phenotypes. Compared to male-fertile plants, male-sterile...

Productividad de grano y semilla de híbridos trilineales, cruzas simples adroestériles y fértiles de maíz. Colegio de Postgraduados
Canales Islas, Enrique Inoscencio.

Reproductive biology and cytology of Hypericum brasiliense Choisy (Hypericaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
Moraes,Izabel Cristina Ribeiro de; Pinto-Maglio,Cecília Alzira Ferreira; Lombello,Ricardo Augusto.
This is the first study of reproductive biology and cytology carried out with Hypericum brasiliense, a species with medicinal properties and potential agronomic interest. Three populations of H. brasiliense collected at Southeastern Brazil were studied. The results indicate that H. brasiliense is preferentially allogamous, self-compatible, facultative apomitic and anemophilous. Male sterility was observed in about 50% of individuals from the three populations. Anatomical studies evidenced structural abnormalities in anthers of male sterile flowers, showing enlarged tapetal cells and thick secretion deposits on the tapetal cell surfaces that may cause nutritional deficit for pollen mother cells. In cytogenetic studies several haploid chromosome numbers were...

Restoring pollen fertility in transgenic male-sterile eggplant by Cre/loxp-mediated site-specific recombination system Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cao,Bihao; Huang,Zhiyin; Chen,Guoju; Lei,Jianjun.
This study was designed to control plant fertility by cell lethal gene Barnase expressing at specific developmental stage and in specific tissue of male organ under the control of Cre/loxP system, for heterosis breeding, producing hybrid seed of eggplant. The Barnase-coding region was flanked by loxP recognition sites for Cre-recombinase. The eggplant inbred/pure line ('E-38') was transformed with Cre gene and the inbred/pure line ('E-8') was transformed with the Barnase gene situated between loxp. The experiments were done separately, by means of Agrobacterium co-culture. Four T0-plants with the Barnase gene were obtained, all proved to be male-sterile and incapable of producing viable pollen. Flowers stamens were shorter, but the vegetative phenotype was...

Symmetric pollen mitosis I and suppression of pollen mitosis II prevent pollen development in Brachiaria jubata (Gramineae) BJMBR
Risso-Pascotto,C.; Pagliarini,M.S.; Valle,C.B.; Jank,L..
Microsporogenesis and pollen development were analyzed in a tetraploid (2n = 4x = 36) accession of the forage grass Brachiaria jubata (BRA 007820) from the Embrapa Beef Cattle Brachiaria collection that showed partial male sterility. Microsporocytes and pollen grains were prepared by squashing and staining with 0.5% propionic carmine. The meiotic process was typical of polyploids, with precocious chromosome migration to the poles and laggards in both meiosis I and II, resulting in tetrads with micronuclei in some microspores. After callose dissolution, microspores were released into the anther locule and appeared to be normal. Although each microspore initiated its differentiation into a pollen grain, in 11.1% of them nucleus polarization was not observed,...

KBSC 605 Thai Agricultural
Supranee Ngamprasitthi; Chokekchai Aekatasanawan; Chamaiporn Aekatasanawan; Surapol Chowchong; Kingkan Panichnok.
Objective of this research was to study the effect of spacing on growth and seed yield in seed production of the non-detasseled baby corn single-cross hybrid KBSC 605. Five spacings were 75*10 cm (133,331 plants/ha), 75*12.5 cm (106,669 plants/ha), 75*15 cm (88,887 plants/ha), 75*17.5 cm (76,187 plants/ha) and 75*20 cm (66,669 plants/ha) were tested in randomized complete block design with four replications at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center in the dry season (December 2008-April 2009). The male: female row ratio was 1: 4 by planting the female rows before the male rows five days. It was found that the 75*10 cm spacing gave the highest seed yield at 10 percent moisture content of 2,157.5 kg/ha different from the 75*20 cm (P LT 0.01). It had...
